Welcome to First Aid: Recompression 2010 - Planet X

Thanks for all the wonderful folks who have stepped up already to volunteer for First Aid.  We can always use some extra help, so if you have a current First Aid Certificate and can help out, please let us know.  The majority of shifts are only 2 hours long and you can continue to roam the event and enjoy while you are on shift.

The First Aid Pod Lead for Recompression 2010 is Benson.  If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer, please feel free to email him:  firstaid@recompression.com

New for 2010

This year at Recompression, we have a team of fully trained Paramedics who will be on duty at all times during the event.  They even have a shiny Ambulance that can play the ice cream truck song as seen at the bacon raid of our neighbouring event at Burn in the Forest 2009.  They are a great group of people and we look forward to having them join us at Recompression this year.

What this means for the First Aid Volunteers is that there is much less pressure to provide coverage for the event.  First Aid will be working in conjuction with Rangers and Peer Support to provide a presence at Recompression.  Having the paramedics on site means that First Aid no longer has to provide round the clock coverage - rather our focus will be to provide coverage during the peak hours, to roam the event grounds and be available to provide help and call for assistance when needed.

Here are a few tid bits of info for First Aid Volunteers:

1. Have fun!! In the past this has been a great event full of fun and exciting things to do and partake in.  We encourage each and everyone to have fun while on shift. You will have a radio while on shift, however you are free to roam around and enjoy the event.  The first aid office is located in the same place it was last year, and will be staffed by the Paramedics for the entire weekend, that means that First Aid does not have to remain at the first aid station. We will be sharing the space with Peer Support, Rangers and the Paramedics

2. We only provide First aid. Nothing more. Please remember that we do not have the liability insurance to cover you providing anything more. General qualifications: current First Aid & CPR certificate. You are only expected to deal with minor incidents - if we encounter anything beyond that, we will call the on-site Paramedics who are fully trained and equipped to handle more complex situations.

3. If we need to send someone to the hospital for whatever reason we do not provide a way back to the event. They need to talk with their campmates. Remember this is radical self-reliance here.

4. If there is a need to bring someone to the hospital, the on-site Paramedics have the ability to call the BC Ambulance Service directly.  Our Paramedics will then begin transport of the patient and meet the BC Ambulance Service en route and transfer the patient over to them.  If this happens, we may need to have a First Aid volunteer at the first aid building while the Paramedics are away from the site.

5. First Aid Meeting - Friday 5pm in the First Aid Building and Saturday 5pm in the Shaman Dome
We will have a briefing and Q&A session, as well as coordination with Rangers and Peer Support just before dinner on Friday evening.  This will also be a time to meet the on-site Paramedic team and familiarize yourself with the first aid building.  The first 15-20 minutes will be spent on "all teams" coordination subjects. The remainder will be spent on First Aid related issues only.  It is vital that all First Aid volunteers attend this meeting so that you know the protocols for this year and have an opportunity to ask questions.  There will be a second quick meeting on Saturday night just to go over any last minute issues.

6. We will have the first aid kit in the room. You must familiarize yourself with the First Aid kits/equipment available and the location. If you remove something from the room please make sure to bring it back and put it into it's proper place.

7. You must be in radio contact during your assigned volunteer shift. This responsibility includes returning the radio for recharging if you notice it is dying and grabbing a fresh radio replacement.

8.  Schedules
This year's schedule is much lighter with coverage only during the peak hours.  They are mainly short 2 hour shifts on Friday from 10pm - 4am, and then again from 9pm-4 am on Saturday with a 3 hour shift starting a 9pm during the fire show.  We hope to have 2 First Aid Volunteers on duty for each shift, with 3 on duty during the fire show.

FRIDAY FA1 FA2
10pm - Midnight Bebe Ibby
Midnight - 2am Bebe Celia
2am - 4am Trina Jenn

Saturday FA1 FA2 FA3
9pm - Midnight Celia Ryan Vava
Midnight - 2am Fletcher Ryan
2am - 4am Fletcher

If you are on duty during the 3 hour shift on Saturday night, it means you get to have front row seats to the fire show and the burning of the man!

If you have put your name forward to volunteer for First Aid you should have received an email with the scheduling information.  If not, please send an email to firstaid@recompression.com.

Thanks again for volunteering - we are looking forward to an amazing long weekend!
